BUGIS JUNCTION

Completed in 1994, this project was developed from a very careful analysis of the brief, and from the relationship of the specific and colourful characteristics and qualities of Bugis Street. The result is an exciting illustration of how well the commercial and community needs of today can exist harmoniously with, and compliment, the older patterns of the past.

Accommodation includes a 400-room hotel, offices, retail shops and leisure facilities. Both functional and visual elements are simply yet strongly stated. The small scale of the old existing streets is retained and the 2 and 3-storey shophouses are reconstructed in a sympathetic manner to reinforce and enhance the local identity. The qualities of the shophouses pervade and are allowed to dominate.

Bugis Junction was awarded a Honourable Mention in the 1995 SIA Architectural Design Awards, a Design Award in the Urban Design Category in the 1998 SIA Architectural Awards, and an ICSS Innovative Design Award, 1995 from the International
