NOVENA SQUARE
Novena Square is the latest landmark to grace the Novena precinct. It is located directly above the Novena MRT station on a site of 16,675m2 with a permissible plot ratio of 4.2. Construction of this development commenced on 7th October 1997. It has a total gross floor area of 70,000m2 comprising 16,650m2 of retail area and two office towers totaling 53,500m2. The development was completed by mid-September 2000.
The architectural form of the office tower is a deliberate breakaway from the traditional twin towers expression. The two 25 and 18 storey tower blocks resemble “glass sculptures” rising from the podium that connects itself to the retail complex that is located directly above the MRT station. The main office tower is the tour de force of the scheme. This inverted trapezoidal form, clad in deep blue glass offers various space planning options. Increasingly larger floor plates on higher levels make it possible to provide prestigious tenants with more desirable views at better rental prices.
A glazed rotunda marks the main entrance to the retail complex, which opens into the generous volume of the retail atrium. The shopping mall is well lit by natural lighting and is made possible through the design of a skylight shaped in a series of truncated and interlocking cones.
Thought has also gone into the planning of the spaces between buildings and the way landscape integrate with architecture. The paving patterns and selection of plants aim to make the development more cohesive and inviting. Vitality is further accomplished with the introduction of specially designed water features capable of holding the public’s interest with their choreography of animated formations.
