Esplanade- Theatres on the Bay
Winner of RIBA World-Wide Award 2005

On 17 June 2005, the Esplanade was one of the 7 projects to be accorded the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Worldwide Awards.

Mr Koh Seow Chuan, Founder of DP Architects and team leader for The Esplanade project, was in London to attend the distinguished award ceremony.

He notes, “The receipt of this RIBA Worldwide Design Award is an international recognition of DP Architects in its pursuit of design excellence in architecture. DP Architects, a home grown architectural practice in Singapore and with offices in the Middle East , China , India and major cities of South East Asia has been exporting its architectural design services outside of Singapore over the last twenty years. This award signals a significant milestone in the history of DP Architects and recognises the role of the firm in the design of The Esplanade,”

From 1993 to 1995, the Esplanade was undertaken together by DP Architects with Michael Wilford & Partners (UK). Completed in July 2002, it ranks amongst the world's largest performing arts space today.

Endearingly named the 'Durian', after a spiky local fruit by Singaporeans, the Esplanade's facade is fully glazed and shaded by hundreds of sun-shading devices. The 'spikes' or sun shades, are uniquely angled and shaped to address the movement of the sun. Besides providing the Esplanade with a distinctive aesthetic, this unique facade design addresses Singapore's problem of perennial harsh sun without sacrificing the stunning views of its context- the Marina Bay and the Singapore skyline.

Besides the RIBA Award, the Esplanade also won the FIABCI Prix d' Excellence (2004) award, the most prestigious award for the real estate world.

Excerpt from RIBA website:
Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay, on its prime waterfront site, relates well to the context and the magnificent views in each direction. Here Michael Wilford with DP Architects has found a new way of picking up on local tradition.
